GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • A National Senior Certificate must be obtained and the minimum statutory requirements for admission to a B Ed degree.
  • A minimum APS Score of 24: The results obtained in four designated subjects and two NSC subjects are used in the computation of the APS score. Life Orientation is excluded.
  • Students with an APS score higher than 24, who do not have a degree endorsement (exemption), may be considered for
    admittance after completing a successful Senate-approved admission test.
  • Strict selection applies for the BEd-degree: applications may be submitted from 1 March until 31 August (see application process below).
  • Please note that, owing to capacity and costing aspects, the University reserves the right to select candidates for admission. This means that prospective students who comply with the minimum requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the BEd programme.

Specific Entry Requirements

  • Basic computer literacy
  • Language requirement: The Home Language at gr 12, pass level 4 (50-59%) is compulsory as Home Language in the Foundation and Intermediate Phases (4 years) and as selected main subject in the Senior and FET Phase.
  • Personal access to Internet (preferably). Wi-Fi available at the campuses and study centres.
  • Open Distance Learning students to attend all scheduled contact sessions at a study centre one afternoon per week from 14h00-18h00.
  • It is the students’ responsibility and it is compulsory for the student to obtain the necessary technology such as a computer and/or tablet and mobile phone that meet the minimum specifications of the NWU namely: WiFi-enabled, one of the operating systems Windows, Android or Apple, 3G enabled (preferable) and 32 Gig (preferable).
  • Compulsory Work Integrated Learning (WIL). All students ( first to fourth year) must do six weeks (three weeks in each semester) of Work Integrated Learning per year at an approved school. (Third year students must do 2 additional weeks of observation at a school of their choice relevant to their applied phase at the beginning of their third year.)

Language Medium

Open Distance Learning studies are only available in English as a medium of instruction.

Duration of study

The minimum duration of study for this degree is four years and the maximum duration is eight years for Open Distance Learning Students.

BEd Curriculum: Foundation Phase

Programme/Qualification Code: (Open Distance Learning): 4BJJ01

  • Students must develop the ability to demonstrate communicative, numerical and technological skills in such ways as to facilitate own academic learning.
  • Within the different specialist elds in the curriculum, the focus is on language, mathematics and life skills.
  • Students receive specialist training within the speci c learning phase to promote learning progression and holistic development. The mastering of teaching and learning strategies, assessment practices and professional conduct are, amongst other aspects, addressed in this programme.
  • The curriculum exists of generic and specialist modules.
  • The curriculum is offered over four years with specific credits which must be obtained yearly.
  • The qualification aims to train prospective educators who want to teach from Gr. R to Gr. 3.
  • Work Integrated Learning forms part of the professional development of the student.

BEd Senior and Further Education and Training Phase

Program / Qualification Code: (Distance Learning): 4BMJ01

  • BEd Senior and Further Education and Training students are expected to successfully master certain outcomes over the four years of study.
  • The integration of knowledge and skills can be obtained within the following specialist fields within the various available curricula: Education Afrikaans, Education English, Education Life Sciences, Education Information Technology, Education Economics, Education History, Education Geography, Education Life Orientation, Education Art, Education Movement Sciences, Education Physical Sciences, Education Management Studies, Education Accounting, Education Applied Computer Technology, Education Mathematics, Education Setswana – mother tongue/ non mother tongue, Education Engineer Graphics and Design.

  • The curricula are compiled from certain modules and offered over four years. The curricula exist of generic modules and main subjects. Work Integrated Learning forms part of the professional development of the student within each phase.
